Artist Profile

Ray's professional art training came about when he was apprenticed by his father to a leading London commercial art studio in 1949, aged 15.

After what seemed like years washing pots, fetching tea and delivering urgent artwork around Fleet Street and the West End (essential training for aspiring artists in those days), he soon became proficient enough to be trusted to produce 'camera ready' artwork.

Specialising in lettering, typography and retouching in a freelance capacity. Finally a studio grew up around him until in the 1970's he was managing a large studio producing all forms of commercial artwork.

Retiring from the printing industry in 1995, he began to paint in watercolour for his own pleasure, being persuaded to hold a one-man exhibition at the Museum of Oxford in 1997. His success has led to many more exhibitions, commissions and his work appearing in personal collections worldwide.

Ray is an active member of Oxford Art Society and has exhibited at the Royal West of England Academy.
